Zoo Day




Today was a fun day! We started the day with a huge breakfast buffet like every morning. These buffets have at least 100 different options. Anything you could think of is here. And a few things you wouldn't think of....like fried fish skin. That is something I just cannot do at 7am.....or 7pm to be perfectly honest.

Our outing for the day was to the Guangzhou Zoo. It was 101 degrees and very sticky! Audrey was super excited to see the pandas; actually she was excited to see all the animals. Jack and Elliana were excited to see the ice cream stand! Ruby just took it all in. Not sure how much exploring she has done in her short life but she really enjoys going places and seeing things...anything.

We went swimming again today in the pool and she really enjoys the water and people watching. We are enjoying learning about the Chinese culture. The signs by the pools in America say, "No diving" and the signs by the pools in China say, "No spitting or nose clearing." We continue to have people take our pictures and ask to take pictures with us daily. Us blonde haired and fair skinned folks must fascinate them!

Gotcha Day

Today is the one year anniversary of Ruby’s Gotcha Day. I will never forget the moment I saw her for the first time in person. She was across the waiting room in the arms of one of the orphanage staff. At first we weren’t sure it was her because she was SO small, but she was wearing the shirt from the outfit I sent to the orphanage in a care package. Up to this point we only saw her in four pictures and three, six-second videos which I watched over and over every day studying this beautiful little being. I studied her thin, patchy hair, knobby knees, beautiful eyes and how one is smaller than the other and how she was fascinated by her hands and played with them as if they were her only toys. Little Miss Ruby Rebekah

As many know, words cannot explain the pure joy in your heart when you see your baby for the first time. We have waited and planned for this little girl longer than she has been alive. Our first thought when we saw a little girl going into our receiving room was, "That cannot be Ruby, she is so small!" But then we realized she was wearing the outfit we sent in a care package. We were taken into the room and she was immediately handed to mom. We could not understand anything that was being said to us....but it really didn't matter. We finally had our Ruby. She was quite uncertain of us from the beginning and it took playing with her and several snack offerings before she warmed up. We could not get over how small she was and still can't. But she is perfect....perfect for us. We all immediately loved on her and by that afternoon she was playful and smiling. Yesterday was a rough day in that she was not feeling well. Taco Tuesday

Our day started out with going to a 6 story flea market. Everything in China is in stories because there are so many building they have to build upwards! It was an interesting shopping trip and our guide only gave us 2 hours so we had to shop fast! We found a few items we were looking for and a few more we didn't need! In the afternoon Steve and Jack went to a park to play ping pong with some of the locals. For any of you that have played Jack in ping pong, you know that he is pretty good. Today, he was humbled. It is true that the Chinese are good at ping pong! We went on an adventure for dinner. One of the families heard of a Mexican restaurant and many of us were excited to have something besides fried rice and noodles. We took a taxi which is always interesting when you don't speak the same language-especially when the cab driver doesn't know where he's going! We finally made it to the restaurant and ate all you can eat tacos and wow were they delicious!! ...
